As the cooler months are approaching, so are the cravings for comfort foods. It’s the months where we spend most of our time indoors, binge watching television, and warming up with a cup of soup and a warm dessert.
Here are three tips on how to enjoy the taste and smell of your favourite comfort foods without feeling guilty…
Set your Parameters
The most important thing about enjoying comfort food is to know your limits. Set yourself some parameters to ensure you actually enjoy your favourites rather than feeling sick after. If you usually reach out for a packet of potato chips while watching TV on a night in, purchase the smaller packets and limit yourself to one packet. If a plate of pasta is your weakness in winter, measure up how much you make to stop you from over-indulging.
Substitute for better options
Using the example of potato chips and pasta, substitute your favourites with lower calorie chips, high protein treats and wholemeal pastas. By making these decisions, you’ll be able to consume your favourite snacks and meals with less calories and less guilt.
Make adjustments to the rest of your diet
When you know you’re going to have a quiet night in with a high chance of comfort foods, adjust your diet for the day. Drink plenty of water, make healthier choices for your meals throughout the day, and if possible, skip out on the snacks. Make room in your calorie intake for the day to indulge in your comfort foods in the evening.
These little adjustments can make a big difference in how you feel and think about your guilty-pleasure. We’re all for enjoying the balance between nutrition and a little extra boost.
